On the Road with the Cigar Caddy 3400 and Drymistat Humidor Humidifier Tube
On the road, off the road, in a kayak, on the beach, there’s literally not a single place a cigar aficionado cannot enjoy a fragrant smoke in the great outdoors. To keep the fragrance and taste, however, requires a travel caddy and optimal humidity conditions. After trying out Cigar Caddy’s 3400 and supplementing it with the Drymistat Humidor, it’s safe to say that this combo works well for the outdoor cigars man or woman. Here are a few tips on how to make the most out of the Cigar Caddy 3400.
Submerge Yourself in Water
This isn’t entirely recommended, but the Cigar Caddy is capable of safeguarding your Churchill’s, robustos, toros, name brands and generics from 100-foot depths. The case’s molded ABS plastic is airtight and tough. The clasps are stainless steel and can be replaced if needed. There’s a coin release for air pressure and the case also floats on water. The attached lanyard makes it easy to connect to your fishing tackle case or golf bag. You can even leave your cigars inside for a few weeks without them drying out, thanks to a humidifier disc.
Don’t Hold Your Breath
The caddy is lined with custom-shaped urethane foam that protects the cigars in snug little grooves. The grooves have a bit of give, which helps them accommodate different-sized cigars. While the majority of users, myself included, haven’t found a problem with the foam’s quality, others have noticed a foul odor that requires airing out.
Get MacGyver On It
According to the manufacturer, the caddy can hold five Churchills, but other users have found it roomy enough for thick-ringed robustos and still others have thought to place an additional four cigars on top of the recommended five. Aside from a bit of box-pressed styling, the cigars were still smokeable.
Another add-on to try out is to place a Drymistat Humidor Humidifier tube in the place of one cigar. The tube is an improvement over the built-in humidifier disc because you will have greater control over humidity levels. Some users have found the Caddy 3400’s humidifier disc to release too much humidity and to release moisture inconsistently. In contrast, the Drymistat only takes the place of one cigar, keeps the interior case at consistent 70% humidity levels for weeks and there’s little guesswork. Add a few drops of distilled water and the interior crystals swell up. But keep an eye on it at first, it might take a day or two for an accurate reading.
You can use this caddy for short trips and some users have successfully carried it on flights with their carry-on, Drymistat Humidor included, but try this at your own risk.
And finally, after relishing your cigars, this caddy makes a great storage unit. After a recent kayaking trip, the caddy served multiple purposes. It had enough space for two phones, two sets of keys and a lighter. Everything stayed dry, secure and easily accessible on the road home.
